I never paid much attention to the phases of the moon—let alone their impact on my health—until I was diagnosed with something called Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS).
If you’re wondering, “What is that?” you’re not alone—I had the same reaction when my doctor told me. DSPS is a sleep disorder that causes a misalignment of your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, leading to very late sleep times.
This diagnosis came during my college years, a period when I was burning the candle at both ends. I was juggling early morning classes, three jobs, and preparing for my senior art show—a pivotal part of earning my degree. My routine included going to bed at 3 or 4 a.m. and waking up by 6 or 7 a.m. for my 8 a.m. class. The breaking point came when I fell asleep standing up during a lecture! That’s when I sought help from a sleep specialist.
Through sleep studies, I learned about my circadian rhythm—your body’s internal clock that regulates your sleep-wake cycle, digestion, mood, and hormones. It became clear that my lack of sleep and irregular schedule were wreaking havoc on my health. I followed a plan to reset my circadian rhythm, which was a game-changer.
Fast forward to today, and while my sleep isn’t as chaotic as it was back then, it’s still not ideal. As I research more about holistic health, I’ve discovered how deeply connected we are to the earth’s natural rhythms, including the cycles of the sun and moon.
When the sun rises, exposure to its light signals our bodies to wake up, providing essential vitamin D and jumpstarting our day. Conversely, the moon signifies the need for rest, helping us recharge for the next day. But the moon’s influence goes beyond sleep—it has distinct phases: new moon, waxing moon, full moon, and waning moon. These phases not only guide our sleep patterns but can also sync with our menstrual cycles.
It might sound unconventional to align your wellness routine with the moon, but there’s a growing body of research supporting this connection. For example, studies suggest that the lunar cycle can influence the timing of ovulation and menstruation in some individuals (Here’s a study I found helpful). By observing the moon’s phases, I’ve learned to care for my body in a way that aligns with its natural rhythms.
Understanding the moon’s phases has helped me feel more in tune with my cycle, empowered to manage my symptoms, and excited about embracing this natural aspect of my body.
To share what I’ve learned, I’ve created a comprehensive guide that explains how to sync your menstrual and circadian rhythms with the lunar cycle. This resource will help you feel your best, take control of your cycle, and embrace the power of natural alignment.
