Sage & Stone: An Herbaceous, Supportive Mocktail

When I thought about creating this drink, I immediately went to one I enjoy year-round — the French 75. It’s light yet sophisticated, playful but refined. The gin brings an herbal backbone that pairs beautifully with the bubbles in prosecco or sparkling wine. On the surface, it seems simple, but it’s actually layered and nuanced on the palate.

That balance is exactly what I wanted to recreate with Sage & Stone — an herb-forward, spirit-free cocktail that feels elevated while supporting the body.

Reimagining Gin: Botanical Flavor Without Alcohol

I knew from the start that I wanted this drink to replace gin, not mimic sweetness or acidity. Gin is defined by its botanical, earthy, and floral notes, so the challenge was finding herbs that could deliver that complexity while also supporting hormonal health. I constantly hear from friends around my age who struggle with night sweats and hot flashes, especially during perimenopause. Based on my previous research, sage immediately came to mind.

Sage for Hormone Balance, Night Sweats & Hot Flashes

Sage has traditionally been used to support thermoregulation, which is why it’s often recommended for women experiencing night sweats and hot flashes during perimenopause and menopause. As estrogen levels fluctuate and gradually decline, the body’s internal temperature regulation can become less stable. Sage is known for its gentle cooling and balancing properties, making it a powerful yet subtle botanical ally. While I’ve used sage frequently in food, this was my first time incorporating it into a drink — and it quickly became the foundation of Sage & Stone.

Basil & Holy Basil: Balancing Earthiness and Stress Response

Because sage can be deeply earthy, I knew it needed a brighter, sweeter herb to bring balance. That’s where basil came in. Basil is fresh, green, and slightly pungent — the perfect counterpoint to sage’s grounding qualities. It also supports digestion and brings lift to the overall flavor profile.

Holy basil — which was my preferred option, though I couldn’t find it locally at the time — is a particularly powerful herb.

It has traditionally been used to help regulate blood sugar, reduce inflammation, and support the body’s stress response. Some research suggests holy basil may help reduce cortisol (stress hormone) levels significantly, making it an incredible ally for women navigating chronic stress and hormonal imbalance.

Once the herbs were set, all I needed was a fruit element.

Why Pear Works for Blood Sugar Balance

For some reason, my mind went straight to pears. Pears are naturally high in soluble fiber, which helps slow glucose absorption and reduce sharp blood sugar spikes. From a flavor perspective, pears offer gentle sweetness without overpowering delicate herbs — unlike berries or tropical fruits, which can dominate the palate.

Pear allows the botanicals to stay front and center while quietly supporting metabolic balance.

Cycle Phase Alignment: Why Sage & Stone Supports the Follicular Phase

For menstruating women, Sage & Stone aligns especially well with the follicular phase — the phase that begins just after menstruation and leads up to ovulation.

What’s Happening During the Follicular Phase

During the follicular phase:

  • Estrogen levels begin to rise
  • The body transitions from rest into renewal and energy-building
  • Insulin sensitivity is generally higher
  • The liver continues processing hormonal byproducts from the previous cycle

This phase benefits from:

  • gentle liver and digestive support
  • blood sugar stability
  • nervous system balance
  • light, refreshing nourishment

The combination of sage, basil, pear, and lemon peel supports these needs without overstimulation or excess sugar.

Sage & Stone for Perimenopause and Menopause

While Sage & Stone pairs beautifully with the follicular phase, it is also an excellent option for women who are no longer cycling. For women in perimenopause or menopause, this drink supports:

  • temperature regulation
  • nervous system calm
  • reduced reliance on sugary beverages
  • cooling, grounding hydration

No cycle tracking required — just intention.

Technique Matters: Preserving Nutrients & Flavor

Sage & Stone is prepared using infusion rather than boiling. Sweetener is added only after the infusion is complete. Heating sugars can increase oxidative stress and alter flavor, so adding it at the end allows for better balance, cleaner sweetness, and more intentional blood sugar support. This approach helps preserve the integrity of the herbs and prevents bitterness or sugar overload.

  • Fresh herbs are added after heat is removed to protect volatile plant compounds
  • Sweetener is added only after straining to avoid oxidative stress increase
  • Citrus is introduced via peel, not juice, to maintain balance

This method allows the drink to remain layered, aromatic, and supportive — just as intended.

The Result: Why Sage & Stone Works

With a few tweaks and minor adjustments, Sage & Stone came together as a drink that feels:

  • herbaceous and refreshing
  • lightly structured and sparkling
  • supportive without being heavy
  • sophisticated like my French 75😉

A spirit-free cocktail that honors both flavor and physiology.
